A Cure for Severe Morning Sickness May Be Coming
Researchers have discovered the primary cause of hyperemesis gravidarum

Dear Friends,
I began my first pregnancy thinking I just wouldn’t get sick.
“I have a strong stomach!” I told my husband gaily soon after getting the positive pregnancy test.
HA.
HA.
HA.
Within a week, I was suffering from full-blown (though “mild,” i.e. I got through it without IV’s) hyperemesis gravidarum, the very worst kind of “morning sickness.”
Here is what I could manage to eat during the first months of that pregnancy. This:
And this:
And sometimes grilled cheese.

Oh, and Gatorade, which one doctor referred to as “poison,” completely ignoring the fact that I actually could not drink water without vomiting.
Yay.
I won’t go into the details, but obviously, I lost a lot of weight and was very, very unwell.
So when I heard (thanks to
, another HG mom) that researchers had found the cause of HG and are now working on using that information to prevent, mitigate, or even cure the condition, I almost cried with joy.Somewhere around 10% of women suffer from some level of HG. The condition can lead to miscarriage, (otherwise undesired) abortion, hospitalization, suicidal ideation, PTSD, depression, loss of employment, alienation of family members, and (otherwise undesired) restriction of family size, among other ills.
You need to know about this and how to help.
Man. I have such respect for women who deal with HG. I would say my morning sickness is perhaps worse than average, but the combination of nausea and zero wiggle room in my diet is awful. And then with our third I had gallbladder attacks that made it impossible to eat much... after that pregnancy a friend expressed surprise we’d have more because I had been so sick and I almost cried with relief bc someone saw and validated how awful I felt. I just think that people severely underestimate the emotional toll of something that you and baby need for your actual survival becoming a source of severe trauma. It’s not just a physical thing -- people are really emotionally battered from it.
Wow! This is great news! I didn't have HG but I was so miserable, and I know many women have it worse than I do.
