A Cure for Severe Morning Sickness May Be Coming
Researchers have discovered the primary cause of hyperemesis gravidarum
Dear Friends,
I began my first pregnancy thinking I just wouldn’t get sick.
“I have a strong stomach!” I told my husband gaily soon after getting the positive pregnancy test.
HA.
HA.
HA.
Within a week, I was suffering from full-blown (though “mild,” i.e. I got through it without IV’s) hyperemesis gravidarum, the very worst kind of “morning sickness.”
Here is what I could manage to eat during the first months of that pregnancy. This:
And this:
And sometimes grilled cheese.
Oh, and Gatorade, which one doctor referred to as “poison,” completely ignoring the fact that I actually could not drink water without vomiting.
Yay.
I won’t go into the details, but obviously, I lost a lot of weight and was very, very unwell.
So when I heard (thanks to
, another HG mom) that researchers had found the cause of HG and are now working on using that information to prevent, mitigate, or even cure the condition, I almost cried with joy.Somewhere around 10% of women suffer from some level of HG. The condition can lead to miscarriage, (otherwise undesired) abortion, hospitalization, suicidal ideation, PTSD, depression, loss of employment, alienation of family members, and (otherwise undesired) restriction of family size, among other ills.
You need to know about this and how to help.
My husband showed me this. It is SO encouraging to hear. I still shudder when I think about the first few months of baby girl's pregnancy and to hear there may be a cure makes me so happy for all first time moms who may get HG!!!
I recently heard about this, and had the same reaction as you! I so severely ill during my pregnancy...and the worst was when I had other people tell me there was no way I could be that sick...I would try to explain but it was hopeless...it was literally all day sickness and had just a few things I could stoamch. it was awful. I hate that you dealt with it too, and pray for all of the women out there dealing this this they have relief soon.
