There's so much good writing out there! Isn't it intriguing how in this increasingly digital age, so many people have turned to expressing themselves through writing?
It’s fascinating! And for me a real challenge in some ways because I love writing and reading on here, especially when I discover others with whom I can say delightedly, “you too?!”
But I’ve noticed I’m more reticent to pick up a book with small print and dense chapters than I used to be. (Although, this may say as much about my ageing eyesight as my temptation towards addiction to tech 😂)
I was getting a bit worried about that, as I hadn't read many books in the past couple of months. But then I took last week off of professional work and a lot of other work, too, and discovered that it's really just that this is a busy season and I lack time and energy for reading. I read three books this past week!
That’s really encouraging to hear! I’m always talking about different seasons of life but sometimes I forget to apply it to my own circumstances regarding things that I’ve “always” done. It’s a helpful reminder.
We all have books that accompany us over our lifespan; this is one of those for me. I read it first when I was a teenager and have reread it every few years since. I always draw something new and different from it.
It’s such an honor for my writing to be listed among so many of my own favorite pieces of the past year. There are also a handful here that I haven’t read yet, so it looks like I’ve got some more reading to do!
Thanks for this superb compilation Dixie! Not sure that I can add any more to my reading list... I concur with Kerri that reading so many essays is eating into my book reading time (which I will aim to prioritize this year). I removed the paywall from "The Great Forgetting" so that readers can dip into it:)
Can't wait to go through all of these! I'd add anything by Kristin @hearthstonefables I just couldn't decide which piece to recommend because they're all so good, so I'll just do it here. (beware: you will be taken down many delightful paths)
My TBR list is getting unwieldy (in a curiousity-sparking kind of way.) I'm looking forward to enjoying these essays!

I'm sure that contributes for you, too!

Thanks, Dixie! And thanks, Ruth! I’m honored.
Thank you for your excellent work, Joel! I really enjoyed your review of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," which is one of my favorite books.
It’s a treasure. I’m so glad I finally read it!

I met some new substacks through this, too!
Thanks for putting this list together and thanks to Brian for mentioning me. Here's to more good work in 2024.
You're welcome! I enjoyed reading.

Happy New Year to the Gaskovskis!
Honored!
Thank you!
Thank you Dixie, and thank you Haley! I love the way you both so hospitably support a wide array of writers.
Thank you for your own good work, Rebecca!

Highly endorse Adrienne's recommendation here ^^^!!
Thank you, Dixie. This is a trove of winter reading.
I hope you'll find something in there that strikes your fancy!
There were a few that caught my attention. Thank you.
Such great ones that I remember loving, as well -- and others I might have to check out! What a great idea you had for this post. :)
Thanks! It gave me all the warm fuzzies to see writers' enthusiastic responses to each other's work!
Thanks so much for this, I’m so excited to read all these!
I really enjoyed these, Dixie! Thank you!
I'm so glad to hear that, Adrienne!
